Calla lilies contain substances that may cause severe mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and abdominal pain in pets if ingested. This is not fatal but very unpleasant. While the flowers simply stand in a vase, they are safe. The risk appears only if an animal decides to chew them.
After purchase, trim the stems by 1–2 cm and place the calla lilies in a clean, tall vase with room-temperature water. Change the water every couple of days and refresh the cut so the stems can absorb water better. Keep the callas away from direct sunlight, heaters, drafts, and fruit — in a cool place they keep their firmness and elegant shape longer.
