As long as the flowers are simply standing in a vase, they pose no risk. However, hydrangeas are toxic to pets if they chew on or ingest them.
After purchase, trim the stem by 1–2 cm at a 45° angle and carefully split the end of the stem crosswise to help the hydrangea absorb water more efficiently. Then place it in a clean vase filled with plenty of cool water within 30 seconds. Change the water every day or every other day and refresh the cut regularly. If the bloom starts to look dehydrated, lightly mist the petals with water. Keep the hydrangea away from direct sunlight, radiators, drafts, and ripening fruit — in a cool place it will stay fresh and full for longer.
